Collisions of Free Floating Planets with Evolved Stars in Globular Clusters

چکیده

We estimate the rate of collisions between stars and free-floating planets (FFPs) in globular clusters, in particular the collision of FFPs with red giant branch (RGB) stars. Recent dynamical simulations imply that the density of such objects could exceed ∼ 10 pc near the cores of rich globular clusters. We show that in these clusters ∼ 5− 10% of all RGB stars near the core would suffer a collision with a FFP, and that such a collision can spin up the RGB star’s envelope by an order of magnitude. In turn, the higher rotation rates may lead to enhanced mass-loss rates on the RGB, which could result in bluer horizontal branch (HB) stars. Hence, it is plausible that the presence of a large population of FFPs in a globular cluster can influence the distribution of stars on the HB of that cluster to a detectable degree. Extremely Close-in Giant Planets from Tidal Capture

Planets that form around stars born in dense stellar environments such as associations, open clusters, and globular clusters are subject to dynamical perturbations from other stars in the system. These perturbations will strip outer planets, forming a population of free-floating planets, some of which will be tidally captured before they evaporate from the system. For systems with velocity disp...

Influence of Planets on Parent Stars: Angular Momentum

I review some possible processes by which planets and brown dwarfs can influence the evolution of their parent evolved stars. As sun-like stars evolve on the red giant branch (RGB) and then on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB), they will interact with their close planets (if exist). The interaction starts with tidal interaction: this will lead the planets to deposit most of their angular moment...

Interpreting the M22 Spike Events

Recently Sahu et al., using the Hubble Space Telescope to monitor stars in the direction of the old (∼ 12 Gyr) globular cluster M22, detected six events in which otherwise constant stars brightened by ∼ 50% during a time of∼< 1 day. They tentatively interpret these unresolved events as due to microlensing of background bulge stars by free-floating planets in M22. Using simple analytic arguments...

Expected Planets in Globular Clusters

We argue that all transient searches for planets in globular clusters are hopeless. Planets in low metallicity stars typically don’t reside at small orbital separations. The dependance of planetary system properties on metallicity is clearly seen when the quantity Ie ≡ Mp[a(1− e)] 2 is considered; Mp, a, e, are the planet mass, semi-major axis, and eccentricity, respectively. In high metallicit...

At least 10-15% of nearby sun-like stars have known Jupiter-mass planets. In contrast, very few planets are found in mature open and globular clusters such as the Hyades and 47 Tuc. We explore here the possibility that this dichotomy is due to the post-formation disruption of planetary systems associated with the stellar encounters in long-lived clusters. One supporting piece of evidence for th...
